The Flash: Will Batman & Superman be Erased?

The DC Extended Universe (DCEU) is trending worldwide yet again for some controversial reasons. Insider Grace Randolph of Beyond The Trailer tweeted out some interesting news that she had heard from one of her sources regarding a lot of information on the future of the major DCEU characters.

The above image states many changes will be coming to the DCEU thanks to the upcoming movie The Flash, starring Ezra Miller as the titular hero Barry Allen/The Flash and releasing in November of this year. The movie is expected to contain some sort of ‘Flashpoint’ event that fans of DC comics wil be familiar with in which Barry Allen uses his speed force powers to travel back in time and save his mother from being murdered by Eobard Thawne aka Reverse Flash. In doing so, he completely alters the timeline, and his present day becomes a lot different to how he left it. After many events unfold, he travels back again to stop his past self from saving his mother, thus rebooting the DC comics timeline and creating the New 52.

Phew… Are you still with me?

The two biggest statements from this list reveal that Leslie Grace’s Batgirl and Sasha Calle’s Supergirl will be replacing Ben Affleck’s Batman and Henry Cavill’s Superman and presumably becoming the DCEU’s biggest stars. Would this be a bad idea? Not entirely, although a common complaint amongst DC fans seem to be that it wouldn’t make sense to erase DC’s two biggest IP’s within their connected movie timeline. However, we will still be getting a Batman within the DCEU, just not Ben Affleck’s. As reported late last year - thanks to an exclusive scoop provided by FandangoMichael Keaton has joined the cast of Batgirl and will be reprising his role as Batman again after appearing in The Flash first. This means we will have a main DCEU Batman within canon, just an older one than what we are used to.

Superman, nevertheless, is a whole different ball game. Henry Cavill’s future as the Man of Steel has been up in their air for years now and the actor himself as consistently expressed his desire and passion to carry on playing the character but as of yet, the call has not been answered. It would certainly be a shame to end the reign of Cavill’s time as the iconic superhero as although we have seen him star in four feature movies – those being Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League (Theatrical Cut) and Zack Snyder’s Justice League – there is still plenty more of the character that both the actor and fans want to see explored.

Unfortunately, the rumours of Affleck and Cavill being done in their respective roles may ring true since insider MyTimeToShineHello backed up Grace Randolph’s statements and reported on twitter that “I don’t usually tweet about DC stuff but I [have] a friend who has seen The Flash and the movie will erase every movie [director Zack] Snyder has done. Man of Steel, Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League never happened now. Erased from continuity, Affleck and Cavill are both gone.”

To follow up on this tweet they then quoted “Supergirl now the main Supes of Earth. Keaton is Batman and Batgirl will become the new Batman after her film”. So, it seems as though their may be a hint of truth in what is being spread around regarding the future of DC’s Worlds Finest duo Batman and Superman.

HOWEVER…

To complicate matters even more, an account titles @FlashFilmNews, an unaffiliated account providing news and updates on the forthcoming movie, posted a DM exchange on Instagram with Ezra Miller himself (under the handle @ezra._.x_aradia).

In this message you can clearly see that Miller states that “no power or force in any known megaverse would or could ever erase Zack Snyder’s mighty wrkz” giving us the impression that Snyder’s aforementioned DCEU movies will NOT be erased from continuity. Of course, these rumours are confusing, but the truth of these rumours will certainly be revealed by the end of The Flash on November 4, 2022.

A New Justice League?

Another eye-catching statement on Grace Randolph’s recent report was that there will be a “New Justice League formed” from the aftermath of The Flash with @MyTimeToShineHello once again backing this statement up by saying “Movie ends with Flash and Supergirl and Shazam forming a new Justice League” then responds to twitter user @ConnorSpeno’s question of “I’m assuming Gadots WW is still involved going forward?” to which they reply with a simple “Yes”.

If reports are correct, the new Justice League of the DCEU would seemingly feature Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Shazam, Flash and Aquaman considering they’re will be the stars of the DCEU movies moving forward and honestly, this roster is awesome!

Although Superman is often considered the heart of the Justice League, we may have no choice but to get used to a live-action Justice League roster that doesn’t feature the Man of Steel.

Despite the fact that these statements by Grace Randolph have caused a lot of controversy amongst fans who claim that the DCEU is now ‘dead’, let’s not jump the gun too quick as these are only rumours. None of these have concrete evidence to support that this will be happening and scoopers/insiders don’t get everything 100% correct but it may be wise to assume that there are at least some truths to the reports.

The Flash is currently in post-production and will release in theatres on November 4, 2022
