The Flash: Everything We Know So Far

The future of the DCEU is completely unknown to the dismay of many DC fans but The Flash movie is being looked at as the potential ‘saviour’ going forward. Plenty of fans are heavily relying on this movie to fix the DCEU and it already feels like the pressure is on for this movie to succeed. There is plenty of rumour's circulating at the moment which leaves us plenty of topics to cover, so let’s dive straight into everything we know about The Flash movie so far!

The Plot

Comic book movies are starting to get incredibly wild and adventurous by bringing the multiverse into a lot of upcoming projects and fans of the Flash will be all too familiar with the DC multiverse. We know that the story of The Flash will loosely follow the iconic DC storyline ‘Flashpoint’, written by Geoff Johns and pencilled by Andy Kubert, in which Barry Allen goes back in time to save his mother but doing this causes him to lose his powers and changes all of reality. While we don’t believe they will be following every single part of ‘Flashpoint’ they will certainly be taking aspects of the story such as Barry travelling back in time to save his mother. But what effect could this have on the DCEU? It remains to be seen yet, although the likely conclusion is that it will have huge ramifications on the timeline moving forward.

Flashpoint (via: DC Comics)

A leak via Reddit revealed that within The Flash, Sasha Calle’s Supergirl would be following the Flashpoint Superman backstory in which instead of landing in Smallville, Superman landed in Metropolis and was kept in an underground bunker by the US government. This could certainly be an interesting way to introduce Supergirl to the DCEU as we know that Sasha Calle is supposedly set to stick around and even get her own solo movie.

Another leak states that Grant Gustin’s Flash from the CW TV show, The Flash, will also show up in the movie which would be very interesting to see especially since him and Ezra Miller’s Flash have already met during the CW crossover event ‘Crisis On Infinite Earths’. It appears unclear as why exactly he will be in the movie, but the leaks suggest that he will be the one to convince Barry to stop himself from saving his mother and thus saving the DC universe.

Confirmed Cast

The Flash/Barry Allen

(via: Warner Bros. Pictures)

We know that Ezra Miller is of course returning as the Scarlet Speedster in the lead role and has his Flash still in the early stages of his crime fighting career. We also have confirmation that Ian Loh will be playing a young Barry Allen meaning that we will probably get to see a certain tragic event in the Flash’s backstory.

Nora & Henry Allen

(via: Unknown/Phil McCarten)

Staying on topic of the Allen family we have confirmation that Maribel Verdu will be playing Barry’s mother, Nora Allen, and Ron Livingston will be playing his father, Henry Allen. This came as a bit of a surprise since we have already seen a version of Henry Allen in the recently released Zack Snyder’s Justice League with Billy Crudup playing the role. But, due to scheduling conflicts, he had to be recast so we will now see Ron Livingston as Henry Allen going forward in the DCEU.

Batman/Bruce Wayne

(via: Warner Bros. Pictures)

Probably the most surprising cast announcement was that Michael Keaton would be returning to the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for this movie. This caused so much excitement but so much confusion as to how he would be fitting into the movie. Many fans are speculating that Keaton’s Batman will be present thanks to Flash’s time travelling antics and will be acting as a mentor to Ezra Miller’s Flash.

As if Keaton’s return to the role of Batman wasn’t big enough, we also have another Dark Knight joining the story. Despite many reports suggesting he was done in the role, Ben Affleck is officially returning as Batman in this movie. We are yet to know his exact role but director Andy Muschietti teased that Affleck’s Bruce is a “substantial part of the emotional impact” of the story. And although we don’t know how much of a role he will have, it’s just great to see him back in the cape and cowl.

Iris West

(via: Corbis)

Another fairly important role for The Flash has Kiersey Clemons reprising the role of Iris West who is extremely important to Barry’s story. We first saw Clemons in the role of Iris during Zack Snyder’s Justice League as her scene was unfortunately cut from the theatrical cut of Justice League way back in 2017. It’s a pretty safe bet that Barry and Iris will be diving deeper into their relationship and more than likely be together by the end of the film (or even before).

Then we have Sasha Calle as Supergirl, which will be the character’s first appearance in the DCEU. It’s fantastic that we get to see Supergirl in the DCEU and from what we have seen of the suit, she looks great in the role!

Unknown Roles

Saoirse-Monica Jackson (left) Rudy Mancuso (right)

To conclude the casting confirmations, we actually have Saoirse-Monica Jackson and Rudy Mancuso both confirmed to be in the movie however their roles are yet to come to light. Many rumours suggest that they might be taking a villainous role but it is still yet to be announced. More on this down below…

It appears the Batmen will play a fairly big role as Michael Keaton’s Batman is set to be present throughout the whole movie. We know that of course Flash and Keaton’s Batman will be working together, and that Keaton will be taking on a mentor role of sorts. It is also rumoured that Flash’s new suit will be made by Keaton’s Batman and will fit into his Flash ring. They will of course be working together but it is unknown if he will suit up as Batman for most of the film. Michael Keaton is in his 70s however we still see him fighting crime as he is suited up in all the official and leaked concept art revealed so far which means he will see him fighting alongside the Flash in the movie.

Ben Affleck’s Batman is rumoured to have a small part to play in the movie, but leaks suggest that he is the one to convince Flash to travel back and save his mother as they both bond over the loss of their loved ones. Unfortunately, this could be the last time we ever see Affleck as Batman because there is potential to erase his Batman from existence since it seems as though they’re going with Keaton’s Batman for the new DCEU timeline.

We have a stacked cast for The Flash and when Sasha Calle was announced as Supergirl the internet went crazy! But it left fans with one simple question, which Supergirl is she? Whilst most fans will be all too familiar with Kara Zor-El the original Supergirl and Superman's cousin, a set photo was leaked by a member of the public which showed Sasha Calle striking an uncanny resemblance to Lara Lane-Kent, the daughter of Superman and Lois Lane from the ‘Injustice’ universe.

(via: DC Comics)

Plenty of leaks on the internet have left much speculation about this version of Supergirl suggesting that she’s Lara Lane-Kent who is the daughter of Christopher Reeve’s Superman from the 1978 Superman movie, then others suggesting she ISN’T the daughter of a Superman and is indeed Kara Zor-El but without the blond hair. This leaves room for so many theories so take your pick!

Villain(s) of The Movie

There has still yet to be any villains officially revealed thus far but that hasn’t come without endless rumour's/leaks surfacing. As we know, the story will be loosely adapting the ‘Flashpoint’ storyline and you can’t have the Flashpoint story without Barry Allen’s greatest enemy, Reverse-Flash.

(via: DC Comics)

As the basis of the story is confirmed to be Barry Allen saving his mother from being killed, at some point we will surely get to see Nora Allen’s murderer. The man responsible for every bad day in Barry Allen’s life, Eobard Thawne, the Reverse-Flash. But unfortunately, his appearance is just a rumour with no casting announcements or anything else as of yet.

One of the villains who has been rumoured for years is a gender-swapped Mirror Master, who is set to be played by confirmed cast member Saoirse-Monica Jackson. Mirror Master is an assassin who has the ability to travel through the mirror-verse thanks to some awesome technology. Two people have taken on the mantle of Mirror Master in the comics, the first one being Sam Scudder and the second being Evan McCulloch. However, since Mirror Master has been gender-swapped the big leak says that she would be the daughter of the original Mirror Master who was an old enemy of Michael Keaton’s Batman. Now this remains to be confirmed as of yet but this could work for sure!

(via: DC Comics)

Another villain rumoured to be appearing in the movie is the Black Flash, and this rumour has had a huge push thanks to more recent leaks suggesting that Black Flash is after Flash for endangering the multiverse (thanks to him saving his mother) but that doesn’t necessarily add up. Black Flash is essentially the representation of ‘Death’ for those who possess super-speed thanks to the speed force, but Black Flash only shows up when a speedster is about to die or suffers a near-death experience. Black Flash’s concern isn’t really the multiverse, it’s the speed force so for him to be present in this situation wouldn’t necessarily make sense although this purpose could simply be changed for the DCEU.

Finally, the Trickster is said to have a comedic cameo during the movie and is set to be played by Rudy Mancuso but apparently, this is as far as his appearance goes during the movie. We may get to see the Trickster in future DC projects however it is believed to be a brief-ish cameo for the time being.
