Matt Reeves Teases Robin For The Batman Trilogy

Director of The Batman Matt Reeves has teased the appearance of Batman’s infamous partner Robin within The Batman universe but only if his story could include and develop emotional stakes for the character.

With The Batman currently out now in theatres worldwide, Reeves’ first chapter in his Batman world is complete and with a trilogy and numerous spin-off series’ planned for HBO Max such as Colin Farrell's Penguin receiving his own solo show and a series centred around the iconic prison/psychiatric ward Arkham Asylum, The Batman content won’t be slowing down anytime soon. But when speaking to the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Reeves expressed his opinion on one character he wasn’t sure on tackling and when asked about featuring the Boy Wonder in any of the sequels, Reeves said this:

"Maybe. We'll just say maybe. I don't know. Here's the thing, I have a lot of ideas about what I want to do. I'm not sure what the next story is. For me, whatever that story's going to be, it's going to be to take these characters — and specifically Batman's character — and put them in some kind of emotional jeopardy. So when you talk about what you're talking about, there may be a really interesting story. There'd have to be emotional stakes to get drawn into that character's story.

I don't want that character to become a cypher. I don't want to be like, 'Okay, so we saw it wasn't an origin tale, but you know what, that was kind of [Batman's] origins and now he's just perfect.' No, you need to test the character again and again and again. And for me, yeah, there might be something in that. I don't know. There's a deep-dive that already happened at the beginning and now I'm gonna have to deep-dive again if we have the chance to make another one and so we shall see."

After the character burst onto the comic scene back in the 40’s, Robin wouldn’t make his live-action debut until the 60’s as Burt Ward portrayed Dick Grayson/Robin within the Adam West Batman TV series. He then didn’t get his proper big screen introduction until Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever where actor Chris O’Donnellplayed a young Dick Grayson who eventually transitioned to Robin to fight Two-Face and Riddler alongside Val Kilmer’s Batman. The actor then returned as the Boy Wonder to tackle Mr Freeze, Bane and Poison Ivy alongside George Clooney’s Batman within the sequel, Batman & Robin.

After subtle easter eggs and hints for years within movies such as his costume appearing in Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s John Blake revealing his legal first name to be Robin within Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises it seems the Boy Wonder will be back in the movie spotlight with not only Dick Grayson rumoured to be appearing in the upcoming DCEU movie Batgirl but also Matt Reeves teasing the potential appearance of the teenage hero for his The Batman universe too.
