Marvel Announce NEW Wolverine Game

Updated: Jan 28

Marvel are absolutely dominating the pop culture game right now with consistent releases of awesome comics, movies, video games and more, and they’ve been at it yet again!

The PlayStation Showcase on the 9th of September revealed many ground-breaking games with the two announcements that stood out to us being of course Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine both being developed by Insomniac Games. Can you believe this? We are getting a Wolverine game made by the same people who developed Marvel’s Spider-Man, Spider-Man: Miles Morales and the 2023-releasing Marvel’s Spider-Man 2!!!

How awesome is that?

Not much is known about Marvel’s Wolverine thus far and when it was revealed it was a complete surprise to fans across the globe, however we did get a short cinematic teaser trailer that gave us the first look at Logan. The cinematic is the only official information we have from Insomniac at this moment in time, but it does set the exact tone for how this game is going to be and that’s Wolverine at his most awesome self.

Reveal Trailer

The trailer is less than a minute of pure Wolverine goodness with it opening in the aftermath of a brutal bar fight with bloody bodies scattered all over the place and our favourite adamantium-clawed mutant standing triumphant, enjoying a nice cold drink at the front of the bar.

Many fans, including fellow news source Newsarama, have been quick to point out that that this bar appears to be the Princess Bar located on the island of Madripoor. Comic fans will be familiar with this bar, as Logan is a regular to the island and this particular spot on it.

Madripoor is also seen on posters in the background of the bar which were pointed out by many eagle-eyed viewers but another thing to notice is a certain license plate that reads ‘HLK 181’. Now, Wolverine made his first full comic appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181 so could this be hinting that we may see Dr. Bruce Banner play a role in the game, or is it simply just an easter egg paying tribute to the first full feature appearance of Wolverine in Marvel comics? We are sure to find out soon.

Now back to the trailer… As Wolverine has his back turned at the bar, we see a brawler who has survived the mass fight as he walks over to Logan and pulls out a knife but Logan senses him coming, places his empty glass down calmly and pops his claws *SNIKT*, the teaser then cuts to black and the title card is revealed. Let the wait for more incredible footage begin…

Release Date

Marvel’s Wolverine has no release date as of yet but knowing Insomniac games, we may have a lengthy wait as they already have Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, set for a 2023 release date, in development as well as this game. Ryan Schneider, head of franchise strategy at Insomniac, stated that the game is “very early in development” so there’s a chance we could get this released in 2023 near to Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 or even after this in 2024. Insomniac clearly need plenty of time to get everything right for this PS5 exclusive as they have been stated in saying they want to deliver an “emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay”.

Insomniac Games are building their own “original” Marvel gaming universe which hints that they have plenty of plans for future Marvel games but the Insomniac team that are leading this game are Brian Horton (creative director) and Cameron Christian (game director) who both most recently led the successful Spider-Man: Miles Morales so have no fear, Logan is in safe hands.

If you’re familiar with Insomniac Games you’ll know they are fantastic at bringing slick, smooth and dynamic third-person action-adventure gameplay so you can expect awesome combat, great traversal and a compelling story that will grab your attention from the get-go.

R Rating?

As soon as Marvel’s Wolverine was announced, the big question on everyone’s mind was will it be gory? This is an important aspect of Wolverine’s character as many people feel he has been toned down too much in his recent portrayals but have no fear… creative director Brian Horton recently responded to a twitter question from user @Amori1770 that asked, “is it a big or a miles morales size game?” and he replied with a simple “full size, mature tone” which confirms they will be embracing the character of Wolverine to his fullest potential.
