Joe Manganiello Teases Deathstroke Return

Though the continuation of the Snyderverse seems unlikely, actor Joe Manganiello got many fans talking with what people perceive to be hints of his return to the role of Deathstroke. Last portraying the character in Zack Snyder’s Justice League in 2021, Manganiello’s Deathstroke had big plans to appear in multiple projects including the cancelled Ben Affleck’s Batman solo movie and even his own solo movie which the actor himself described as:

"A Tom Clancy ripped from the headlines sort of story, or even like a Bourne Identity where it was going to be really grounded, and political with military drama as far as what it would take to go from devoting his life to his country for this life he believed in to, you know, having the rug pulled out from underneath him and being stabbed in the back and not knowing who to trust."

The solo outing was also due to feature Deathstroke’s ex-wife Adeline Kane, their young children, his closest companion Wintergreen and Talia Al Ghul, daughter of the Demons Head, Ra’s Al Ghul. Manganiello also revealed that the script for the cancelled movie also included the origin of Deathstroke’s famous sword and ties to the League of Shadows (hence the Al Ghul inclusion).

Having only made two brief appearances in DC live-action movies, those being 2017’s Justice League & 2021’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League, Joe Manganiello took to Instagram to post an image of his Deathstroke from Zack Snyder’s Justice League with the caption “new profile pic…”

This comes months after Manganiello’s exclusive interview with comingsoon.net where he revealed he “let that one go a while ago” referring to any chance of him suiting back up as DC’s deadliest assassin.

Is He Really Coming Back?

By no means at all does this picture mean that Manganiello’s Deathstroke will be returning to the DCEU, but it is important to note that James Gunn, director and long-time friend of Joe Manganiello, had originally intended to use Deathstroke instead of Idris Elba’s Bloodsport within his The Suicide Squad movie that released in 2021. Whether he was to use Manganiello in the role of the masked assassin was unknown, but it means that the character is still in conversation for future DCEU projects, and after all, John Cena’s Christopher Smith could use a villain for the recently confirmed Peacemaker season two set to release in 2023.

You can catch Joe Manganiello and Co. in Zack Snyder’s Justice League streaming on HBO Max and Sky Cinema now.
