One of the most exciting upcoming projects coming out of the DC camp in the coming years is the highly anticipated feature film Blue Beetle. Set to release in 2023, the movie stars Cobra Kai’s Xolo Mandueña as Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle, with the project being directed by Angel Manuel Soto and centring around a young Jaime discovering the Blue Beetle scarab that grants him his awesome superpowers.

With the movie currently in pre-production, barely anything is known about the plot. However, a recent rumour, first put forward by scooper @LookUponTheSta, suggests that Warner Bros. are eyeing up James Marsden (X-Men, Sonic the Hedgehog) to play Ted Kord/Blue Beetle within the DCEU.

Who is Ted Kord?

Ted Kord was created by Steve Ditko & Gary Friedrich & is a genius inventor who was heir to the Kord Industries fortune. Having been inspired by Batman & Superman to become a hero in his own right, Ted had a chance encounter with the Golden Age Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett, who ultimately inspired him to take on the mantle of Blue Beetle. Equipped with bug-themed gadgets, Ted sports his bright blue super suit to fight crime as the second Blue Beetle.

Ted Kord has been a key member of the Justice League and featured heavily in the legendary Justice League International run by J.M DeMatthias, Keith Giffen & Kevin Maguire back in the 80s. Though being a member of the Justice League is a talking point in itself, Ted Kord is perhaps most commonly known for his hilarious friendship with fellow superhero Booster Gold, with the two being the best of friends and sharing an unbreakable bond in the comics.

Though the upcoming Blue Beetle movie centres around Jaime Reyes’ Blue Beetle, including Marsden as Ted Kord within the movie would make complete sense. Not only does Kord Industries appears in the background of the first official concept art for the movie (seen below), but Ted Kord was also Jaime’s mentor/partner when the titular hero first received his Blue Beetle scarab.

This rumour should be taken with a large grain of salt, but it appears that Ted Kord may be appearing at some point within the future of the DCEU. Stay tuned for more information surrounding the Blue Beetle movie.

Blue Beetle is set to hit theatres & HBO Max in 2023.
