Insomniac Games Announce Marvel's Spider-Man 2
The PlayStation Showcase on the 9th of September was full of some of the biggest game reveals of all time but in terms of the superhero genre, we believe no two games announced have created as much hype as the two that PlayStation revealed on their showcase last week. Those being Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and Marvel’s Wolverine, both currently being developed by acclaimed gaming studio Insomniac Games.
Insomniac have already cemented themselves in Spidey history by developing two of our favourite games of all time, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales respectively and now the hype for more Insomniac Spider-Man games is through the roof once again thanks to another legendary reveal.
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is finally happening, but after numerous teases from their previous Spider-Man games, we all knew it was coming eventually. But now we have our first official reveal and look at what’s to come, so let’s break it down!
In one of the first clips of the teaser we get to see not one but two spider logos, both Peter Parker’s Spider-Man logo and Miles Morales’ Spider-Man logo were shown to the audience, but we already knew this was coming, didn’t we?

Peter and Miles have been the focus of Insomniac’s Marvel universe thus far with both receiving their own solo games respectively. However, players were only given a glimpse of the two Spider-Men suited up and working together as a duo – at the beginning of Spider-Man: Miles Morales - but now us Spidey fans look likely to see the two team up throughout an entire game.
What could be more exciting for Marvel fans than partnering up with a fellow Spidey and taking down supervillains?
Although many people had speculated that when Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 was revealed, it would be a co-op game, unfortunately for some, this doesn’t seem to be the case as Insomniac themselves were quoted in saying “We’re so thrilled to continue the journey of both Peter Parker and Miles Morales in their most epic single-player adventure yet” on PlayStation’s official article about the new Spidey game. This implies that both Spider-Men will be playable but only in single-player mode.
Although some fans may feel slightly let down, there may be a character switching element of the game which allows you to play as either of the two Spidey’s whenever you’d like. That would still be awesome right?
Much of the development team that brought us Marvel’s Spider-Man is returning to produce Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, including Bryan Intihar (creative director) and Ryan Smith (game director). As we only received a small teaser for what’s to come, we have no doubt that these great guys will be shedding more light on what to expect from the game soon enough.

Throughout the small teaser we see both Spider-Men working together to fight off bad guys but who are they fighting? And whose voice is that speaking over the trailer?
We think we may have the answer as both would seem to have a link… Kraven The Hunter.
The bad guys that the Spider-Men seem to be fighting all have very similar jungle-themed gear with bladed weapons and who else uses bladed weapons with a jungle-themed look? Kraven. Who has a strikingly similar Russian accent to the voice speaking over the trailer? Kraven.
Now, it’s not just this that seems to give away that Kraven is involved somehow, but the words that this voice speaks are strikingly similar to Kraven’s personality. The voice says “for as long as I can remember, I have looked for an equal” which could relate back to Kraven’s comic origin of having become bored with the hunting game and looking for a real challenge in Spider-Man. The voice then goes to say that he is looking for “one that could push me, one that could surprise me, one who could even beat me” implying he is really looking for a challenging opponent and us as the audience know that the Spider-Men are definitely a handful.
The voice then finishes off by asking a question: “will one of you finally give me what I desire?” which reveals that he is talking to more than one person, possibly both Peter and Miles. But there’s more…
The trailer cuts to a blacked-out side-alley on the street with a shadowy figure emerging from darkness uttering the words “yes…we will” in a monstrous voice revealing himself to be none other than Venom, giving us a first look at what he’s going to look like in the game.

Venom has been hinted at in both Insomniac Spider-Man games using both post-credit scenes to tease his arrival. But instead of the teases hinting to the Venom we all know and love, Eddie Brock, it implies that Harry Osborn – son of Norman Osborn and Peter Parker’s closest friend – will be the one to don the symbiote. The only times we have seen Harry in these games is when he is locked in a tank with a symbiote-like creature which appears to be used to heal Harry of some sort of illness that was explained back in Marvel’s Spider-Man.
But now that Venom has arrived in the Insomniac Marvel universe, we know there’s going to be some chaos! No other villains have been hinted at thus far, but thanks to older hints from previous games we are more than likely going to get a huge array of Spidey villains raising hell in New York.
Even more great news is that Insomniac were extremely happy to announce that Yuri Lowenthal and Nadji Jester will be reprising their roles as Peter and Miles respectively whilst also announcing that Tony Todd - famous for his role in Candyman - will be the voice of Venom. Both Spidey games by Insomniac have been constantly praised about their voice actors and how well they’ve performed so you can expect more where that came from this time round!
