Hawkeye: The Official Trailer Breakdown

After months of speculation, Marvel have finally released the official trailer for their latest Disney Plus series Hawkeye, which will be premiering on the 24th of November of this year and will certainly get you in the Christmas spirit.

We get plenty of looks at Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Clint’s family which have notably grown older and the Marvel cinematic universe’s newest hero, Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) and it certainly boosts the hype for the series.

There’s a lot of talking points from this trailer and it gives us a great feel for how Hawkeye’s life is looking for him post-blip whilst giving him a new sharp-shooting partner to deal with the consequences of his time as the masked vigilante Ronin. We will be diving into all the exciting things shown in the trailer and what they mean for the Avenging Archer going forward in the MCU.

Trailer Overview

The Christmassy promo sees Clint’s family plans for the winter holiday interrupted when his past tenure as the vigilante Ronin comes back to haunt him. When a new young protégé by the name of Kate Bishop arrives on the scene as well, things only get a lot more complicated from there.

We get looks at Hawkeye and his family, Kate Bishop, Ronin, the Tracksuit Mafia, Lucky the pizza dog, Maya Lopez aka Echo, Kate and Clint fighting off endless bad guys, Clint’s iconic Dodge muscle car, trick arrows and much more! The trailer is non-stop action and will leave plenty of great impressions on fans of the MCU.

We now have two Hawkeye’s running around instead of one which is great to see! Fan-favourite Kate Bishop, played by Oscar-nominated actor Hailee Steinfeld, has finally arrived and what a time to do it. Hawkeye’s future was fairly uncertain during/after the end of Avengers: Endgame but it was fantastic news when Marvel announced that Hawkeye would be getting his own live-action solo series based on the legendary Hawkeye comic run by Matt Fraction and David Aja.

It’s clear to see that Hawkeye is in a lot of trouble… the criminal underworld he so badly upset during his time as Ronin is now out to get their revenge and he could really do with a helping hand. In comes Kate Bishop… the young, aspiring hero who is Hawkeye’s biggest fan. It’s clear to see that she will be trained up to become a superhero in her own right and fight alongside Clint.

There’s many gangs and criminals out for Clint Barton’s head so one more Hawkeye alongside him isn’t going to hurt right? The dynamic between Clint and Kate in the comics is one of the most entertaining in all of comics and they share a lot of banter together so it will be awesome to see this come to life with the series.

Villains

It appears that Clint upset A LOT of people as Ronin which tells us that there will be plenty of villains hunting down the Avenger and we actually get a look at two of the people that will be hunting him down, with the first one being the Tracksuit Mafia. We get a couple of clips showing the tracksuit-wearing gang violently hunting down Clint and the trailer shows that they even manage to capture him at one point. The Tracksuit Mafia were a prominent part of Matt Fraction’s incredible comic run on Hawkeye so seeing them in the Disney+ series is such a great call back to the comic.

Another character set to oppose the Hawkeye’s is Echo aka Maya Lopez, played by Alaqua Cox, who is known for her photographic reflexes and incredible fighting prowess. She is also well-known for being the first person to take on the mantle of Ronin in the comics. But here’s the kick, she will be acting on orders from the Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, who last appeared in the Daredevil Netflix series. Kingpin has huge ties to Echo as she is manipulated by him from a young age to be the ultimate killing machine who will once and for all end Daredevil. She eventually breaks ties with Kingpin and becomes a hero in her own right so it could be interesting to see if she becomes Ronin going forward. Echo is also getting her own Disney+ series set to release in the coming years so this won’t be the last time we see Maya Lopez that’s for sure!

Kingpin hasn’t been officially confirmed but many inside leaks, reliable sources/scoopers have indeed stated that the Kingpin is back! Although set to appear in only a few episodes, Kingpin does indeed play a huge part in Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye run as he rallies up the villains who all want the arrow-shooting Avenger dead. He is set to be behind all the villainous acts throughout the whole series and in the comics, he is responsible for hiring the Tracksuit Mafia so the connections are building up...

Another rumoured villain is set to be Madame Masque who, like Kingpin, feature’s prominently in the Hawkeye comic run by Matt Fraction where she had a long-standing bout with Kate Bishop. If she does appear, then they could be showing part of the infamous storyline run called ‘The Tape’ from the comics, in which Madame Masque holds an auction in Madripoor for a tape of Clint Barton killing a dictator which is set to be sold on the black market.

Missing Characters

The trailer missed out on a few characters who are confirmed to appear in the series with those being Clint’s former mentor the Swordsman, played by Tony Dalton, and Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, who we already know and love from Black Widow. Swordsman’s role is largely unknown however Yelena will be hunting down Hawkeye, at least to begin with anyway.

Those of you that have seen Black Widow will know that during the post-credit scene, Yelena was visited by Valentina Allegra De Fontaine, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, whilst visiting Natasha’s grave. Val told Yelena that Hawkeye was responsible for Natasha’s death so we get the impression that Yelena will now be hunting Clint down.

Us as the audience know that Clint wasn’t responsible for Nat’s death so we assume that Clint will tell Yelena the truth during one of their confrontations in the show. Yelena will probably only feature in a few episodes, but it will be awesome to see the fan-favourite character so quickly after her last appearance in the MCU.

The last missing character from the trailer is Laura Barton, Clint’s wife played by Linda Cardinelli. She is missing from the shots of the Barton family, and many are speculating why this could be. However, we do see later on that Clint is on the phone to, who we assume is Laura, reassuring her that he will be back with his family soon.

Young Avengers

(via: Marvel Comics)

The arrival of Kate Bishop in the MCU seems to be foreshadowing the eventual emergence of the Young Avengers as crucial members of the team are slowly being introduced through all of the Disney+ shows. With WandaVision introduced Wiccan and Speed, Falcon and the Winter Soldier brought us Elijah Bradley, most commonly known as Patriot, and now Kate Bishop in Hawkeye, Marvel definitely have plans for the young superhero team going forward.

Clint's Hearing Aid

The character of Hawkeye has a history of being depicted as at least partially deaf in the comics, but it has never been implied that our MCU Hawkeye suffers from a similar problem. However, in the trailer Clint can be seen with something that looks a lot like a hearing aid. This wouldn’t really need to be touched upon that much as at this point as the adventures Clint has been on causes this to be pretty self-explanatory. Although, the Hawkeye comics that this series is based on ties directly to the incident that caused a new hearing loss for Clint meaning we could in fact see how this happens.

Eleanor Bishop

(via: Marvel Studios)

The Conjuring star Vera Farmiga is playing Kate’s mother Eleanor Bishop in Hawkeye. Kate comes from a very wealthy family, and we get a brief shot of Kate’s mum in the trailer. In the comics, she is known for getting up to her own fair share of criminal activities and having connections with Madame Masque too, so Kate may have problems of her own to deal with whilst also helping Clint. The trailer appears to show that Vera Farmiga’s role is being closely guarded, but we have no doubt that there is more to her than meets the eye.

Lucky the Pizza Dog

Marvel’s favourite canine finally makes his live action debut in the MCU. With Clint and Kate being the obvious headliners of Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye run, Lucky the pizza dog was definitely the third star of the show. Many fans fell in love with Lucky during this comic and we even got a whole issue told solely from the perspective of Lucky himself, this would be so cool to see in the series if Lucky got his own segment in the series where the audience sees the series from his point of view.

(via: Marvel Studios)

You’ll also notice the Lucky has one eye. Lucky was given that name by Clint because the poor pup is anything but, which is exactly like his owner. We already know many people will be routing for Lucky during the series so we can’t wait to see the trio of Clint, Kate and Lucky in action.
