Eternals Trailer Has a HUGE Reveal... But it's NOT Who You Think it is

Marvel have released the final trailer for their upcoming blockbuster movie ‘Eternals’ directed by Oscar-winning director Chloe Zhao and it looks epic! With many months of speculation for the Eternals film, fans finally have a good idea of what to expect with great action, romance and exploration of Marvel cosmic history, it seems the movie will be packed full of Marvel goodness.

The weight of this film is huge since not only does the movie have a wide range of A-list actors including Angelina Jolie (Thena), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Kit Harrington (Dane Whitman) and more. But it will also be an expansion of key elements of Marvel’s cosmic mythology as well. For comic fans, the expectation seems to be very big however it could also be the gateway for many of the general audience into the more unknown characters of the Marvel universe.

Unlike the previous trailer, this trailer does a much better job of setting up and explaining the concept of the Eternals and what exactly will be going on. Essentially the Eternals are one of three races created by the Celestials (almighty space gods), the other two being Deviants and Humans. Eternals are genetically perfect, super powered immortals with each having a unique power. In the MCU, it's revealed that they’ve been on Earth for 7,000 years and were sent to protect humans from the evil Deviants although they were specifically instructed to not interfere with human conflicts unless Deviants were involved (hence the reason they didn’t interfere with Thanos etc).

Deviants

The villains of the film seem to be the Deviants who are genetically unstable creatures with no two being the same. The Deviants have a monstrous appearance as we see a few appear in the trailer with the Eternals battling against them. One that stands out however appears to be Kro, one of the first Deviants introduced in the comics, who seems to be the main villain of the movie.

Kro’s appearance look fairly different in the comics and interestingly enough, he potentially has a romantic history with Thena (according to Jack Kirby’s Eternals comics) which could be revealed as canon in the MCU as well. In the comics, Kro is notorious for shapeshifting into demons in order to scare humanity, so he seems to be the perfect fit for a villain in the Eternals movie.

Celestials

We’ve already seen a glimpse of the Celestials in the earlier days of the MCU. Back in 2014 when the first Guardians Of The Galaxy movie was released, we caught a look at Eson the Searcher and a dead Celestials head which houses the city of Knowhere. But since then, the Celestials haven’t had any sort of mention up until now and in the trailer we finally get a look at two more Celestials:

Arishem the Judge

Arishem is one of the most powerful Celestials in the Marvel universe and also one of the first introduced by Jack Kirby way back in 1976. The fact that Arishem is appearing is not good for the Eternals, it means that the Celestials are back to judge their previous creations with there being no guarantee that this will end well for anyone. Salma Hayek’s Ajak refers to an event known as ‘the emergence’ which could mean the coming of the Celestials and explains to Ikaris (Richard Madden) that they have seven days until an event occurs, most likely the judgement.

Nezarr the Calculator

Although we only get a brief glimpse at Nezarr, what we can tell you is that this powerful Celestial’s sole duty is to examine and organize all data bought to him and then give those findings to Arishem the Judge. We have no doubt that more Celestials will make an appearance, but it will be great to finally see some of the best creations from legendary comic creator Jack Kirby on the silver screen.

Galactus?

Unfortunately not…

Many fans got extremely excited when seeing clips from the trailer and quickly made assumptions that one of the almighty god-like beings shown in the trailer was the devourer of worlds, Galactus. Although Galactus is pretty much confirmed to be appearing somewhere down the line, unfortunately for MCU fans we will have to wait longer to finally see Galactus conquer the MCU.

When the time is right, Galactus will surely be introduced when the likes of the Fantastic Four make their MCU debuts in years to come but when he does arrive, it will certainly be a grand introduction.
