Doctor Strange 2: Every Rumoured Member of The Multiversal Illuminati

The official trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has arrived and has gotten every Marvel fan talking. With new footage, insane cameos and outstanding visual effects, the trailer gave us a good look at what we can except for the next movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe but some of the biggest talking points for the movie are who exactly will be in the mysterious team teased in the trailer.

Haven’t seen the trailer yet? What are you waiting for? Check it out below…

The biggest reveal from the trailer is undoubtedly the reveal of Patrick Stewart as Professor X and what seems to be the multiversal Illuminati. In one moment from the trailer, Strange is presented to what appears to be to a throne room with six chairs and three figures present whilst three chairs are empty giving fans the idea that their will indeed be six members of this Illuminati team.

Who are Marvel's Illuminati?

(via: Marvel Entertainment)

The Illuminati were created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Steve McNiven first appeared within the pages of the creative duos New Avengers comic run. They are a covert cabal team consisting of the most powerful and influential people on earth (most powerful meaning intellectually and politically powered) who make the big decisions regarding world-saving matters. Each member represents a portion of the superhuman community with…

Doctor Strange, Sorcerer Supreme, representing the magical element of Earth; Reed Richards, leader of the Fantastic Four and the most brilliant scientific mind on the planet; Namor, king of the advanced underwater kingdom of Atlantis; Black Panther, king of the most advanced civilization on the planet Wakanda; Professor X, figurehead of the X-Men and a prominent member of the mutant community; Black Bolt, king of the Attilan and the inhumans; and finally Tony Stark, leader of the Avengers as Iron Man and one of the wealthiest and most intellectually gifted people on planet Earth.

The team have taken part in some of the most prominent events in Marvel history such as being responsible for tricking Bruce Banner (the Incredible Hulk) and sending him to space and also playing a huge part in attempting to prevent the collapse of the multiverse during Jonathan Hickman’s Avengers/New Avengers comic run.

EVERY Rumoured Member of The Illuminati

Who the members are exactly is a mystery but rumours have thrown out many names from returning characters from pre-MCU Marvel movies to brand-new Marvel characters and we are here to give you the run down on every character rumoured/confirmed for the MCU’s multiversal Illuminati.

Professor X

(via: 20th Century Fox/Marvel)

The only confirmed member so far, Patrick Stewart is indeed returning to play Charles Xavier but which version of Professor X he is portraying is still unknown. Those familiar with Stewart’s previous portrayal of Professor X know that he died a total of two times (once in X-Men: The Last Stand and once in Logan) which potentially rules out that this wil be the Professor X from the FOX X-Men movies.

A popular rumour suggests he may be portraying the Professor X from the X-Men 90s animated series which would be a strange yet interesting conclusion considering the revival of the 90s series by Marvel Studios titled X-Men 97, but although the version of the character is unknown, it is believed that his role may be a prominent one as it seems like he could indeed be the head of this multiversal Illuminati

Defender Strange

(via: Marvel Studios)

Making his debut appearance in the Multiverse of Madness trailer, Defender Strange is belived to be an alternate version of our main MCU version of Strange. This variant sports a ponytail and a black and red suit and as his name states, he could possibly allude to some sort of multiversal defender making him a worthy candidate for this Illuminati.

Baron Mordo

(via: Marvel Studios)

Chiwetel Ejiofor’s Mordo was last seen within 2016’s Doctor Strange as he began his quest to eliminate every sorcerer in earth and by the time of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Mordo may have a different quest after Doctor Strange’s recent antics within Spider-Man: No Way Home and decided to team up with others to prevent multiversal danger.

But is this Mordo from the main MCU universe or is it a variant? This is a question that could be asked for every single person within this movie, sporting a different hair style Mordo’s recently revealed Marvel Legends Series action figure states his name as “Master Mordo” further implying that this may not be the Mordo we are familiar with.

Mister Fantastic (Ioan Gruffudd & John Krasinski)

(via: 20th Century Fox/Marvel)

One of the biggest rumours out right now is the appearance of a Reed Richards. That’s right, I said “a” since we have got two front runners on who this may be. The first one being Ioan Gruffudd reprising his role having previously stared as the leader of the Fantastic Four in 2005’s Fantastic Four and 2007’s Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer who is strongly rumoured to be appearing.

The next would be everyone’s go-to fancast for the main MCU Mister Fantastic and that is John Krasinski who is rumoured to be portraying a variant of Reed Richards within the movie. It seems as though Reed Richards will indeed be making an appearance within the movie as it is fitting for his character since the multiverse is seemingly in danger. If it is indeed a variant and not the main MCU version that appears, it will certainly be interesting to see if this has any effect on the upcoming Fantastic Four that is releasing in the coming years. But Reed makes up a huge part of Marvel’s Illuminati in the comics and so I certainly would not rule out a version of him appearing in the movie.

Captain Carter

(via: Marvel Studios)

Like Professor X, Captain Carter is indeed confirmed to be appearing in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as a sliver in the bottom corner of the official movie poster showed an image of her shield. Fresh out of Marvel Studios’ What if? Captain Carter was one of the most popular characters from the MCU animation and Hayley Atwell’s performace as Peggy Carter from the main universe is popular too, she is a great fit for the Illuminati of this movie. This will be Captain Carter’s first live-action appearance as she will be portayed by Hayley Atwell as excepted and if she is indeed a member of this team, it would make her a part of two multiversal teams as What if? showed her as an active member of the Guardians of the Multiverse too.

Superior Iron Man (Tom Cruise)

(via: Unknown Artist)

This rumour has been around for a while, and it seems there is a genuine possibility for this to happen. This version of Iron Man is said to have possession of his world’s Infinity Gauntlet and is also rumoured to be linked with the Ultron bots we saw escort Doctor Strange through what is thought to be the Illuminati’s base. Another hint of Cruise’s Superior Iron Man in the trailer points towards a mysterious figure seemingly in a silver set of armour which is very similar to Superior Iron Man’s armour in the comics.

Is this wishful thinking? Maybe, but if the MCU has taught us all anything it is expect the unexpected and Iron Man is also a key member of the Illuminati in the comics as he was the one who assembled the team together in the first place.

Balder the Brave

(via: Marvel Entertainment)

The Asgardian half-brother of Thor is yet to make his appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as of yet but this may change very soon. Originally set to play a part in 2011’s Thor, Balder was removed in post-production but numerous scoopers and reports are suggesting that he will be appearing within Multiverse of Madness as a member of the Illuminati.

One of the sons of Odin, Balder is a formidable Asgardian warrior who can certainly aid in the protection of the multiverse but why he would be involved in this Illuminati? Could he be a variant that wield Thor's hammer Mjolnir? Is it Balder from the main MCU? Many questions are there to be asked however it remains uncertain at this moment in time.

Black Bolt (Anson Mount)

(via: Marvel Studios)

Marvel like to forget about the time they tried to push the Inhumans to become the next X-Men (due to rights issues with Fox) and made one of their worst received projects in the Inhumans TV series. However, it seems that they are grabbing one aspect from the failed TV show to put into their Illuminati and that is Black Bolt, played by Anson Mount.

King of the Inhumans Black Bolt will always have a seat reserved at the Illuminati so a version of him appearing makes perfect sense and having Blackagar Boltagon (yes, that is his real name) confirms that the Inhumans do exist in the MCU whether he is a variant or not, which leads the way for other Marvel characters like his wife Medusa, Thane (son of Thanos) and many more to appear in the MCU later down the line.

Captain Marvel (Lashana Lynch)

(via: Marvel Studios)

Another variant! Lashana Lynch is rumoured to be portraying Captain Marvel from an alternate version in which her character, Maria Rambeau, became Captain Marvel instead of Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers. This again can be safe to assume as true as many eagle-eyed fans have pointed out a character fighting Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch in the trailer looks not only strikingly similar to Lynch, but also seems to possess the powers of Captain Marvel (as seen above).

Magneto

(via: 20th Century Fox/Marvel)

The mutant rumours are coming in hot and heavy and now Charles Xavier is confirmed, his long-time frenemy Magneto is heavily rumoured. Which version of Magneto is still unknown whether it is Ian McKellen, Michael Fassbender or someone completely different but it appears that many scoopers are now heavily pushing this rumour.

A hint for a potential meeting with Magneto in the trailer is present as a short clip shows Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Xochitl Gomez’s America Chavez seemingly travel through dimensions and end up on what seems to be the Savage Land. X-Men fans will be very familiar with the Savage Land as many of the merry mutants’ stories have taken place there.

The Savage Land is a hidden tropical prehistoric land in Antarctica with characters like Ka-Zar and Shanna She-Devil residing there but why is this important to Magneto? Well, for a time Magneto staged his base of operations there.

A reach? Yes of course but it certainly makes sense as to why Magneto could potentially be featured within Multiverse of Madness. But whatever is happening, the mutants are coming...

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi, exclusively hits theatres on May 6 2022.
