Batgirl: J.K Simmons Hints at NEW DCEU Timeline

It has been common knowledge for a while now that actor J.K Simmons will be reprising his role as Commissioner James ‘Jim’ Gordon in the upcoming DC comics movie Batgirl starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl, Brendan Fraser as the villain Firefly and directed by Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah. However, Simmons himself gave a juicy piece of information on the upcoming Batgirl movie and detailed that although his character debuted in Justice League (2017) and recently appeared in Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021), Batgirl will be heading into a new direction within the DC multiverse.

Talking to Looper per Den of Geek Simmons said:

“I was as surprised as I was when [Marvel] came back to ask me to do [Jameson] that they were coming to me to play Batgirl’s father, Commissioner Gordon again, in this new version of the universe. We’ve already had lots of discussions about the script and how to play everything”.

He then added:

“I’m excited by the cast and the directors and looking forward to diving back into the DC multiverse”.

Although this doesn’t reveal much, it does show us that Batgirl will be heading into a new direction that could be different to previous DC movies but what does this mean?

Let’s turn our attention to the upcoming movie The Flash, set to release on November 4th 2022, because this movie is set to have huge ramifications for the future of DC movies. It is rumoured that the Flash, played by Ezra Miller, will be time-travelling/dimensional travelling in his solo outing thanks to his speed force-based powers which could potentially reset the main DCEU timeline.

What does this have to do with Batgirl? Well, if Ezra Miller’s Flash resets the timeline of the main DCEU (DC Extended Universe) or even the DC multiverse this would technically create a new universe in order to maintain a strict continuity which was the original plan for the DCEU and Batgirl could fit within this. Whether Batgirl will be a part of the brand-new timeline seemingly created by the Flash or not, it will be interesting to see exactly where the movie fits in with the live-action DC multiverse.
